Have To vs Must

Here are some creative ideas to help your students practise must/mustn’t,have to/don’t have to.  Encourage them to use their imagination as much as possible.

The Modal Hotel

  1. Tell the students they have taken over the management of a hotel and have to decide rules for the guests.

  2. Brainstorm ideas regarding rules.

  3. Divide the class into groups and tell the students they have to make up a set of rules using must/mustn’t, have to/don’t have to.

  4. Compre rules and decide on one set.

  5. For further practice, get the students to draw up the rules and illustrate them.

Adult vs Child

  1. Divide the students into groups and tell them that they are going to discuss the different responsibilities that children and adults have.

  2. Give some ideas such as, children have to go to bed early; adults must work to earn money.

  3. Allow the children to use their imagination, and get them to read out their ideas to the rest of the class.

  4. Younger children can then illustrate them.
